Hello, mountain lover! After guiding hundreds of climbers across all routes, I can confidently say the **Shira Route** offers one of the most unique and visually spectacular experiences on Mount Kilimanjaro. It begins at a very high altitude on the Shira Plateau (one of the highest plateaus in the world), giving you dramatic views and a strong head start on acclimatization from day one.
The Shira Route is essentially a variation of the Lemosho Route but starts higher up, crossing the vast, windswept Shira Plateau with its ancient volcanic caldera, giant lobelias, and panoramic views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. It then joins the Machame Route higher on the mountain, allowing you to enjoy the famous Barranco Wall and the classic southern circuit scenery.
This 7-day camping route is ideal for climbers who want stunning high-altitude scenery, good acclimatization, and a slightly more remote feeling in the early stages. With expert guiding and proper pacing, it delivers excellent summit success rates.
Walk across the vast Shira Plateau with breathtaking 360° views and unique volcanic landscapes found nowhere else on the mountain.
Starting at over 3,500 m gives your body an early advantage in adapting to altitude.
The combination of high starting point and gradual progression leads to strong summit success rates.
Compared to the longer Lemosho Route, Shira is shorter and starts higher, making it more direct while still offering spectacular scenery. It is less crowded than Machame in the beginning but shares the dramatic final sections with other southern routes.

The Shira Route starts at high altitude, so even though the walking is relatively gentle at first, your body will feel the thinner air immediately. Good prior acclimatization (sleeping at altitude if possible) and strong cardiovascular fitness are important.
The plateau can be very windy and cold, especially at night. Pack excellent windproof layers and a warm sleeping bag. Walk slowly and drink plenty of water from day one.
