Climbing Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level. It is located in northern Tanzania near the Kenya border and is the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, rising about 5,200 meters from its base on the surrounding plains. It is also one of the Seven Summits, attracting climbers from across the world.

The mountain is part of Kilimanjaro National Park and covers an area of about 1,688 square kilometers. It has a unique ecological system with five major climate zones: cultivated land, rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit zone. Temperatures at the summit can drop to -20°C (-4°F), while the base remains warm and humid throughout most of the year.

Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano made up of three volcanic cones: Kibo (5,895 m), Mawenzi (5,149 m / 16,896 ft), and Shira (3,962 m / 13,000 ft). Kibo is the highest cone and contains Uhuru Peak, the official summit. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, while Kibo is dormant and last showed major volcanic activity around 360,000 years ago, with minor activity believed to have occurred less than 200 years ago.

The mountain is also known for its shrinking glaciers. Since 1912, Kilimanjaro has lost more than 80% of its ice cover, and studies show continued rapid decline due to climate change.

Climbing Kilimanjaro does not require technical skills, but the challenge is altitude. Oxygen levels at the summit are about 50% lower than at sea level, making acclimatization, pacing, and route duration (typically 5–9 days) critical for a successful summit attempt.

Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes

There are seven (7) main routes used to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, and all of them lead to the summit at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level. These routes include Machame, Marangu, Lemosho, Rongai, Northern Circuit, Shira, and Umbwe, each offering a different way of experiencing the mountain.

Each route varies in duration, scenery, and difficulty, typically taking between 5 to 9 days depending on the itinerary you choose. Some routes provide better acclimatization with a gradual ascent, while others are shorter and more direct, making route selection an important part of your climbing success.

Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro Mountain

The best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is during the dry season from June to October. During this period, the weather is more stable and rainfall is low. The trails are firmer and safer for trekking.

Another good time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is from January to early March. During this period, the weather is relatively dry and temperatures are slightly warmer. Visibility is generally good and hiking conditions are more comfortable, making it a favorable season for a successful summit attempt.
