LEMOSHO ROUTE 8 DAYS GROUP JOINING – THE ULTIMATE KILIMANJARO EXPERIENCE

OVERVIEW OF THE 8-DAY LEMOSHO GROUP CLIMB

The 8 days Lemosho Route Group Tour is widely considered the most scenic and rewarding approach to the roof of Africa. Unlike the busier routes, Lemosho starts from the western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate. This route is famous for its remote wilderness, diverse ecological systems, and the breathtaking crossing of the Shira Plateau. By spreading the trek over 8 days, we offer the best possible acclimatization profile, which translates to a summit success rate of over 95%.

Our group joining system is designed to bring together like-minded adventurers from across the globe. Whether you are a solo traveler or a small group, joining our scheduled departures allows you to share costs while benefiting from a professional support team, including Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certified guides, dedicated porters, and a chef who prepares fresh, high-altitude meals daily.

Lemosho is unique because it allows climbers to experience the undisturbed rainforest of the western slopes before merging with the Machame route on the third day. From there, you will witness the iconic Lava Tower, scramble up the Great Barranco Wall, and traverse the southern icefields before the final midnight push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

DETAILED 8-DAY LEMOSHO ITINERARY

01

Day 1: Moshi – Londorossi Gate (2,100m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m)

After a detailed briefing and gear check at your hotel in Moshi, we drive to Londorossi Gate for park entry formalities. A further short drive takes us to the Lemosho starting point. The trek begins in the dense, undisturbed rainforest. Keep your eyes peeled for Colobus monkeys and exotic birdlife as we hike to our first camp, Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree).

  • Distance: 6 km | Time: 3–4 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 720m | Habitat: Rainforest
02

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa (2,820m) – Shira Camp 1 (3,500m)

The trail continues through the forest but soon steepens as we enter the heath and moorland zone. We cross several streams and trek over the Shira Ridge before descending gently to Shira Camp 1. This camp offers our first stunning views of Kibo Peak across the vast plateau.

  • Distance: 8 km | Time: 5–6 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 680m | Habitat: Moorland
03

Day 3: Shira Camp 1 (3,500m) – Shira Camp 2 (3,850m)

Today is a gentle day designed for acclimatization. We explore the Shira Plateau, trekking across the high-altitude moorland toward Shira Camp 2. We can take a detour to visit the 'Shira Cathedral,' a massive volcanic rock structure surrounded by steep spires.

  • Distance: 7 km | Time: 3–4 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 350m | Habitat: Moorland
04

Day 4: Shira Camp 2 (3,850m) – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)

This is a vital day for your body to adjust. We climb to the volcanic Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch. This is our highest point so far. After lunch, we descend into the Barranco Valley. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is the secret to successful acclimatization.

  • Distance: 10 km | Time: 6–8 hours
  • Elevation: 780m ascent / 670m descent | Habitat: Alpine Desert
05

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960m) – Karanga Camp (4,035m)

We start the morning by climbing the Great Barranco Wall. While it looks intimidating, it is a non-technical scramble that most hikers find to be the most fun part of the route. Once at the top, we traverse ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, where we spend the afternoon resting.

  • Distance: 5 km | Time: 4–5 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 75m (net) | Habitat: Alpine Desert
06

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) – Barafu Camp (4,673m)

The trek continues through the alpine desert toward the junction with the Mweka Trail. We ascend to Barafu Camp (Swahili for "ice"). This is our high camp, situated on a narrow, rocky ridge. We eat an early dinner and try to sleep by 7:00 PM in preparation for the midnight summit push.

  • Distance: 4 km | Time: 4–5 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 638m | Habitat: Alpine Desert
07

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,673m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Our summit attempt begins at midnight. The climb is a mental and physical challenge through heavy scree and extreme cold. We reach Stella Point (5,756m) by dawn to see the sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. A final hour of trekking brings us to Uhuru Peak—the Roof of Africa! After celebrating, we descend back to Barafu for lunch and continue down to Mweka Camp for our final night.

  • Distance: 15 km | Time: 12–15 hours
  • Elevation: 1,222m ascent / 2,795m descent | Habitat: Arctic/Rainforest
08

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,100m) – Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Moshi

The final morning is a steady descent through the tropical rainforest to Mweka Gate. We celebrate with our mountain crew, sign the park register, and receive our certificates. Our vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi for a long-awaited hot shower and celebration dinner.

  • Distance: 10 km | Time: 3–4 hours
  • Elevation Loss: 1,460m | Habitat: Rainforest

NUTRITION & HYDRATION

Eating well is critical at high altitudes. Our chefs provide a balanced diet high in carbohydrates to fuel your climb. Breakfast usually includes porridge, eggs, and toast; lunch is often a hot meal in the mess tent; dinner includes soup, main courses (pasta, rice, or potatoes with meat/vegetables), and fruit. We cater to vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free diets upon request. We provide purified water throughout the trek.

SAFETY & PROFESSIONALISM

Your safety is our absolute priority. Our guides are trained to recognize the early signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). We perform health checks twice daily using pulse oximeters to monitor your heart rate and oxygen saturation levels. Every group carries a medical kit and emergency oxygen cylinders. Our guides are certified in Wilderness First Response, ensuring they can handle emergencies with professional calm.

PHYSICAL PREPARATION

While the 8-day Lemosho route is designed for maximum acclimatization, it still requires physical fitness. We recommend a training program that includes cardiovascular exercises (hiking, running, or cycling) and strength training for the legs. The best preparation is hiking in your boots on hilly terrain with a weighted daypack to build stamina for the 15-hour summit day.

WHY LEMOSHO IS THE BEST CHOICE

Choosing the 8-day Lemosho route means choosing success. Short 5 or 6-day routes often result in altitude-related failures. By spending two extra days on the mountain, you allow your body to naturally produce more red blood cells, which carry the oxygen needed to reach 5,895 meters. Furthermore, the scenery on Lemosho is unmatched; you see the mountain from every angle, from the flat western plateau to the jagged southern cliffs.

Joining a group also provides social motivation. Climbing Kilimanjaro is as much a mental game as it is physical. Having a group of peers to talk to, laugh with, and encourage during the difficult summit push can make the difference between turning back and standing on the peak.
