Detailed Itinerary

The Marangu Route is the only Kilimanjaro route that offers hut accommodation throughout the climb, providing a more stable and comfortable experience on the mountain. This 5-day luxury version builds on that foundation with enhanced service, a more attentive support team, and thoughtful details that improve comfort at every stage. While the route remains direct and relatively short, your climb is carefully managed with a steady pace, personalized guidance, and consistent care from your crew.

01

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your journey begins with a comfortable transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where registration is completed in a relaxed and organized manner. After meeting your guide team and receiving a briefing, you begin your trek through the rainforest zone. The trail is shaded and gently ascending, allowing for a smooth start to the climb. The environment is rich with tall trees, birdlife, and occasional sightings of colobus monkeys. Your guides maintain a calm, steady pace, ensuring you remain comfortable as you gain altitude. Upon arrival at Mandara Hut, you settle in, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, and have time to rest in a quiet and natural setting.

  • Elevation: 1,860m to 2,700m
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest
02

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After a well-prepared breakfast, you continue your ascent as the landscape gradually transitions from dense forest to open moorland. The air becomes cooler and clearer, and the trail offers wider views across the mountain. Unique vegetation, including giant heathers and alpine flora, begins to define the scenery. On clear days, Mawenzi Peak stands prominently in the distance, adding to the sense of scale and isolation. The pace remains controlled and unhurried, with regular breaks for hydration and rest. Upon reaching Horombo Hut, you have time to relax, take in the surroundings, and allow your body to adjust to the increasing altitude.

  • Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland
03

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today’s trek crosses the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a wide and open stretch of alpine desert. The terrain becomes more rugged and minimal, with a noticeable drop in vegetation and an increase in altitude exposure. The environment is quiet and expansive, creating a sense of focus as you move closer to the summit zone. Your guides carefully manage the pace to support acclimatization, ensuring you remain steady and well-supported throughout the day. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you are given time to rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear. An early dinner is served before you retire to prepare for the overnight summit attempt.

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m
  • Distance: 9 km
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
04

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

The summit attempt begins shortly after midnight, with a slow and steady ascent under the night sky. Equipped with headlamps, you move at a controlled pace, guided closely by your experienced team. The climb is gradual but demanding, requiring focus and determination. Reaching Gillman’s Point marks a significant milestone, after which you continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak. Standing at 5,895 meters, the summit offers a quiet and rewarding moment, often accompanied by sunrise over the surrounding landscape. After spending time at the top, you begin your descent carefully back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut where a warm meal and well-earned rest await.

  • Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m to 3,720m

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

The final day is a steady and comfortable descent. You retrace your steps through the moorland and gradually return to the rainforest zone, where the air becomes warmer and richer. The walk allows time to reflect on the journey and absorb the final moments on the mountain. Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, you receive your summit certificate in recognition of your achievement. A transfer then takes you back to Moshi, where you can rest and conclude your Kilimanjaro experience in comfort.
