The Marangu Route is the shortest and most direct route with hut accommodation. This 5-day group version is popular for its comfort and straightforward path, though it has fewer acclimatization days.
The journey begins with a drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate for registration. From here, you start your trek through dense rainforest, where the air is humid and the trail is alive with birdlife and occasional monkey sightings. The walk is steady and allows your body to gradually adjust as you make your way to Mandara Hut for your first night on the mountain.
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail opens into moorland with wide views and cooler air. The landscape becomes more expansive, and on clear days, Mawenzi Peak appears in the distance. The pace remains steady as you gain altitude and reach Horombo Hut, where you will rest and prepare for the next stage.
Today’s trek crosses the alpine desert known as the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The environment becomes quieter and more rugged, with thinner air and minimal vegetation. You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, where you rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt later that night.
The summit attempt begins around midnight. Moving slowly under headlamps, you ascend toward Gillman’s Point and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit is a quiet and rewarding moment. After taking in the views, you descend carefully back to Horombo Hut for rest.
The final day is a descent through moorland and back into the rainforest. The air becomes warmer as you lose altitude. At Marangu Gate, you receive your summit certificate before returning to Moshi, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro journey.
Mount Kilimanjaro is located in northern Tanzania, East Africa, near the border with Kenya. It stands within Kilimanjaro National Park and rises from the surrounding plains of the East African savannah.
Our Marangu Route group treks are highly rated for their great value, comfortable huts, and friendly group atmosphere.
