The Northern Circuit Route is regarded as the most complete and rewarding way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the longest standard route on the mountain and offers an extended journey that circles much of Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes. This design allows climbers to experience maximum scenery, minimal crowds, and the best possible acclimatization profile.
The route begins on the western side of the mountain near Londorossi Gate. From there, it passes through dense rainforest before reaching the expansive Shira Plateau. Unlike shorter routes, the Northern Circuit continues further north, offering unique and less-traveled perspectives of Kilimanjaro’s vast landscapes.
As the trail progresses, climbers experience wide views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks from the northern side, an angle rarely seen on other routes. The journey eventually reconnects with the southern routes for the final summit ascent, allowing climbers to reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet).
The Northern Circuit is designed for a slow, steady ascent over a longer duration. This extended timeframe gives the body more opportunity to adapt to altitude changes, making it one of the safest and most successful climbing profiles on Kilimanjaro.
The early sections of the route are quiet and remote, offering a deep wilderness experience. Climbers move through untouched forest, open moorland, and vast alpine zones with very limited traffic compared to the southern routes.
One of the most defining features of this route is its northern traverse, where trekkers enjoy wide-open landscapes, panoramic mountain views, and a strong sense of isolation and natural beauty.
The route circles much of the mountain, offering diverse and uninterrupted views of Kilimanjaro’s major peaks and landscapes.
The long duration and gradual ascent provide ideal conditions for altitude adaptation and reduced risk of altitude sickness.
Due to its extended itinerary, the Northern Circuit consistently delivers some of the highest summit success rates on Kilimanjaro.
8-Day Northern Circuit Route is a slightly shorter version suitable for strong and well-prepared climbers. It still provides excellent acclimatization and full circuit coverage but follows a more compact schedule.
9-Day Northern Circuit Route is the recommended option for most climbers. The additional day allows for better rest and acclimatization, especially in the mid-mountain stages. This improves comfort, reduces fatigue, and significantly increases summit success probability.
From guiding experience, the 9-day itinerary consistently provides a more enjoyable, safer, and more successful climbing experience overall.
The route offers long stretches of quiet trekking with minimal crowds, creating a true wilderness experience.
Climbers enjoy rare 360-degree perspectives of Kilimanjaro’s major peaks and surrounding landscapes.
The extended itinerary structure provides one of the safest altitude progression profiles on the mountain.

The Northern Circuit is the longest route, so good physical and mental preparation is essential. Focus on building endurance with long hikes and stair training at least 4 months in advance. Because of the extended duration, packing efficiently and managing energy wisely are key.
Walk slowly (“pole pole”), stay well hydrated, and take full advantage of the extra acclimatization day on the 9-day version. The route offers incredible views but also long trekking days — mental strength and patience will serve you well.
