MARANGU ROUTE 5 DAYS GROUP JOINING – THE CLASSIC COCA-COLA ROUTE
OVERVIEW OF THE 5-DAY MARANGU GROUP CLIMB
The 5 days Marangu Route Group Tour, often referred to as the "Coca-Cola" route, is the oldest and most established path to Uhuru Peak. It is unique among Kilimanjaro routes because it offers dormitory-style hut accommodation instead of camping. This makes it an ideal choice for trekkers who prefer to avoid sleeping in tents, especially during the rainy season. Starting from the south-east at the Marangu Gate, this route follows a well-maintained trail that serves as both the ascent and descent path.
While the 5-day itinerary is physically demanding due to the rapid ascent, our group joining system ensures you have the support of a highly experienced crew. Joining an international group of climbers not only makes the trip more affordable but also provides a social atmosphere at the Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts. Each hut provides basic bunk beds with mattresses, shared dining halls, and basic washroom facilities, offering a unique "mountain village" feel.
The 5-day version of the Marangu route is recommended for fit hikers with previous high-altitude experience. Because it lacks an extra acclimatization day, your physical preparation and the expertise of your guides are paramount. Our professional team will monitor your health daily to ensure you have the best chance of reaching the summit safely.
Why Marangu is Unique:
Unlike every other route on Kilimanjaro, Marangu uses the same trail for up and down. This provides a great opportunity to encourage fellow climbers you meet along the way. It is also the only route where you can buy soft drinks and chocolates at the lower huts—hence the nickname!

DETAILED 5-DAY MARANGU ITINERARY
Day 1: Moshi – Marangu Gate (1,860m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)
We begin with a transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate. After registering with the park authorities, the climb starts through a lush, humid rainforest. This zone is teeming with life; look for the Black and White Colobus monkeys in the canopy. The trail is well-defined and winds through massive trees and ferns. We reach Mandara Hut by mid-afternoon, where you can take a short walk to Maundi Crater for views of the Kenyan border.
- Distance: 8 km | Time: 4–5 hours
- Elevation Gain: 840m | Habitat: Rainforest
Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Leaving the forest, we enter the moorland zone. The landscape opens up to reveal giant lobelias and groundsel plants. The trail offers expansive views of the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This is a longer day of walking, and the air begins to thin. We spend the night at Horombo Hut, a small village of huts that serves both ascending and descending climbers.
- Distance: 12 km | Time: 6–8 hours
- Elevation Gain: 1,020m | Habitat: Moorland
Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Kibo Hut (4,703m)
We continue our ascent into the alpine desert zone. We pass the "Last Water Point" before crossing the lunar-like "Saddle" – a broad plateau connecting the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain is rocky and barren, with high winds often present. We arrive at Kibo Hut, a stone building at the base of the summit cone, for an early dinner and rest before the midnight summit push.
- Distance: 10 km | Time: 6–8 hours
- Elevation Gain: 983m | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 4: Kibo Hut (4,703m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Summit Day. We wake up around 11:30 PM for a light breakfast. The climb begins in the darkness on a steep, zig-zagging scree path. We reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim by dawn. From here, it is a 1-2 hour trek through snow and ice to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After enjoying the views, we descend back to Kibo for lunch and continue further down to Horombo Hut for our final night on the mountain.
- Distance: 16 km | Time: 10–14 hours
- Elevation: 1,192m ascent / 2,175m descent | Habitat: Arctic/Moorland
Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Marangu Gate (1,860m) – Moshi
The final day is a long descent through the moorland and back into the rainforest. It is a time for celebration as you walk the final kilometers to Marangu Gate. Successful climbers will receive their gold certificates (for Uhuru Peak) or green certificates (for Gilman's Point). Our vehicle will meet you at the gate for the drive back to Moshi for a celebratory dinner.
- Distance: 20 km | Time: 5–7 hours
- Elevation Loss: 1,860m | Habitat: Rainforest

HUT ACCOMMODATION DETAILS
The huts on the Marangu route are basic but functional. You will sleep in bunk beds with sponge mattresses. While the huts offer protection from the elements, they are not heated, so a warm sleeping bag (rated to -15°C) is still essential. Electricity is limited, often powered by solar, so bring power banks for your devices. Mandara and Horombo huts have running water from mountain streams, while Kibo hut relies on water carried up by porters.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Because the 5-day Marangu route does not have an acclimatization day, the risk of Altitude Sickness is higher. We mitigate this by training our guides to strictly enforce a slow pace ("Pole Pole"). We also conduct health checks twice daily, monitoring your oxygen saturation and heart rate. If you are concerned about altitude, we highly recommend upgrading to the 6-day Marangu route, which adds an extra day at Horombo Hut.
PHYSICAL PREP FOR 5 DAYS
To succeed on this 5-day push, you should be in good physical condition. Focus on aerobic capacity and leg endurance. We recommend training with long walks, stair climbing, and gym work focused on core strength. Since you will be descending 2,175 meters in a single day after the summit, strong knees and good hiking poles are your best friends.
WHY JOIN A MARANGU GROUP TOUR?
Joining a group on the Marangu route is a fantastic way to meet people. Because everyone stays in the same hut clusters, the evenings are social and lively. You will find yourself swapping stories with climbers from every corner of the world in the shared dining halls. It is a communal experience that makes the hard work of climbing Kilimanjaro much more enjoyable.
Furthermore, our group departures are guaranteed once we have a minimum of 2 people. This gives you peace of mind that your trek will proceed as planned. With Top Kilimanjaro Guides, you are choosing a company that values safety, porter ethics, and professional service above all else.
