7 Days 6 Nights Machame Route (also known as the “Whiskey Route”) is one of the most popular and scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The extra night at Karanga Camp significantly improves acclimatization compared to the 6-day version.
The 7-day Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southwest, passes through five climatic zones, and descends via the Mweka route. You will see the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley, and the southern ice fields before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).
This itinerary is ideal for trekkers who want a better chance of summit success while still enjoying the dramatic scenery of the Machame Route.
The 7-day schedule gives your body more time to adapt to the altitude, especially on the critical days leading up to the summit attempt.

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a drive from Moshi to Machame Gate (about 45–60 minutes). After registration and a final equipment check, you start trekking through the lush montane forest. The trail climbs steadily and can be muddy or slippery after rain, so gaiters and trekking poles are useful. The forest is rich in vegetation and birdlife. You arrive at Machame Camp in the afternoon and settle in for your first night on the mountain.
Elevation: 1,800 m → 3,010 m · Distance: 11 km · Time: 5–7 hrs · Habitat: Montane Forest · Meals: Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, you leave the forest behind and continue climbing through the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you follow a rocky ridge before turning west toward a river gorge. The vegetation becomes shorter and the landscape opens up, giving you wider views. You continue toward the Shira Plateau and arrive at Shira Camp, where you spend the night at a higher elevation.
Elevation: 3,010 m → 3,850 m · Distance: 5 km · Time: 4–6 hrs · Habitat: Moorland · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today is an important acclimatization day. From Shira Camp you climb gradually across the high-altitude landscape toward Lava Tower (4,630 m). After reaching Lava Tower, you descend into the Barranco Valley. This climb-high, sleep-low pattern helps your body adjust to the altitude. By the time you reach Barranco Camp you are back at a lower elevation and ready to rest.
Elevation: 3,850 m → 3,960 m · Distance: 10 km · Time: 6–8 hrs · Habitat: Semi-desert / Alpine Desert · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast you take on the famous Barranco Wall. The climb looks steep from camp, but the trail uses natural steps and does not require technical climbing. From the top you continue across the Karanga Valley. The landscape becomes more open and rugged. You arrive at Karanga Camp in the early afternoon. This extra night is the key advantage of the 7-day itinerary and greatly improves acclimatization before the summit push.
Elevation: 3,960 m → 4,035 m · Distance: 5 km · Time: 4–5 hrs · Habitat: Alpine Desert · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
A shorter day that takes you to the high camp. After breakfast you climb steadily through the alpine desert toward Barafu Camp (4,640 m). The landscape is rocky and sparse. You arrive at Barafu in the early afternoon, have time to rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight start to the summit.
Elevation: 4,035 m → 4,640 m · Distance: 4 km · Time: 3–5 hrs · Habitat: Alpine Desert · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Summit day begins around midnight. You leave Barafu Camp in the darkness and climb slowly through the steep scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The pace is deliberately steady. As dawn approaches you reach Stella Point and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you begin the long descent via Barafu and continue down to Mweka Camp, where you spend your final night on the mountain.
Elevation: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m · Distance: 5 km up / 12 km down · Time: 6–8 hrs up / 5–7 hrs down · Habitat: Stone Scree & Summit · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast you begin the final descent through the montane forest toward Mweka Gate. The trail becomes greener and can be muddy in the lower sections. At Mweka Gate you complete the park exit formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. Your driver meets you and transfers you back to your hotel in Moshi. After seven days on the Machame Route you can finally relax, enjoy a hot shower, and celebrate reaching the Roof of Africa.
Elevation: 3,100 m → 1,640 m · Distance: 10 km · Time: 3–4 hrs · Habitat: Forest · Meals: Breakfast
