Overview – 6 Days Lemosho Route

6 Days Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro. It starts on the western side of the mountain and offers excellent views, varied landscapes, and a good balance of adventure and acclimatization for a shorter itinerary.

The route begins at Lemosho Gate, crosses the Shira Plateau, joins the southern circuit at Barranco, and ascends to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) via Barafu Camp. You will experience rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the dramatic Barranco Wall before the summit push.

Although the 7-day and 8-day Lemosho itineraries offer even better acclimatization, the 6-day version remains a popular choice for trekkers with limited time who still want the beauty of the western approach.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp | 3–4 Hrs

Your climb begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Lemosho Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After registration you start trekking through the lush rainforest. The trail is relatively gentle on the first day. You arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) in the afternoon and settle in for your first night on the mountain.

Elevation: 2,100 m → 2,650 m  ·  Distance: 6 km  ·  Time: 3–4 hrs  ·  Habitat: Rainforest  ·  Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp → Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast you leave the forest and climb steadily through the heath and moorland zone onto the Shira Plateau. The landscape opens up dramatically and you get excellent views. You arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon. This is a beautiful and relatively quiet part of the mountain.

Elevation: 2,650 m → 3,610 m  ·  Distance: 8 km  ·  Time: 5–6 hrs  ·  Habitat: Moorland  ·  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Today is an important acclimatization day. You cross the Shira Plateau and climb toward Lava Tower (4,630 m). After a short rest at Lava Tower you descend into the Barranco Valley. This climb-high, sleep-low profile helps your body adapt to the altitude. You spend the night at Barranco Camp with impressive views of the Barranco Wall.

Elevation: 3,610 m → 3,960 m  ·  Distance: 10 km  ·  Time: 6–8 hrs  ·  Habitat: Alpine Desert  ·  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

After breakfast you tackle the famous Barranco Wall. The climb is steep but non-technical and offers spectacular views. From the top you continue across the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows further acclimatization before the final push to Barafu.

Elevation: 3,960 m → 4,035 m  ·  Distance: 5 km  ·  Time: 4–5 hrs  ·  Habitat: Alpine Desert  ·  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

A relatively short but important day. You climb steadily through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), the base camp for the summit attempt. After arriving you rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight start to Uhuru Peak.

Elevation: 4,035 m → 4,640 m  ·  Distance: 4 km  ·  Time: 3–5 hrs  ·  Habitat: Alpine Desert  ·  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Summit day begins around midnight. You climb slowly through the steep scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). After celebrating at the summit you descend via Barafu and continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain. The next morning you complete the descent to Mweka Gate and transfer back to your hotel.

Elevation: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m  ·  Distance: 5 km up / 12 km down  ·  Time: 6–8 hrs up / 5–7 hrs down  ·  Habitat: Stone Scree & Summit  ·  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
