Overview – 6 Days Umbwe Route

6 Days Umbwe Route is the steepest and most direct trail to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It approaches from the south and gains altitude very quickly, making it one of the most physically demanding options on the mountain.

Because of the rapid ascent, the Umbwe Route offers limited acclimatization compared to longer itineraries such as the 7 Days Lemosho or 8 Days Lemosho Route. It is best suited for experienced, very fit trekkers who have previous high-altitude experience and prefer a challenging, less-crowded path.

The route joins the southern circuit at Barranco Camp and continues to the summit via Barafu. While scenic and dramatic, it has a lower success rate than more gradual routes like the Machame Route or Lemosho. Most operators recommend longer versions when possible.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp | 5–7 Hrs

Your climb begins with a drive to Umbwe Gate on the southern side of Kilimanjaro. After registration you start the steep ascent through dense rainforest. The trail is continuous uphill and can be muddy. You arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp in the afternoon for your first night on the mountain.

Elevation: 1,600 m → 2,850 m  ·  Distance: 10 km  ·  Time: 5–7 hrs  ·  Habitat: Rainforest  ·  Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp → Barranco Camp

A demanding day with continued steep climbing. You leave the forest and enter the moorland and heath zone. The trail follows a narrow ridge with dramatic drop-offs. You eventually join the southern circuit and descend slightly into Barranco Camp. This rapid gain in altitude makes proper pacing essential.

Day 3: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

After breakfast you climb the famous Barranco Wall. The ascent is steep but non-technical. From the top you continue across the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp. This shorter day provides a small amount of additional acclimatization before the final high camps.

Elevation: 3,960 m → 4,035 m  ·  Distance: 5 km  ·  Time: 4–5 hrs  ·  Habitat: Alpine Desert  ·  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

A steady climb through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), the base for the summit attempt. After arriving you rest, hydrate, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight start.

Elevation: 4,035 m → 4,640 m  ·  Distance: 4 km  ·  Time: 3–5 hrs  ·  Habitat: Alpine Desert  ·  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Summit day begins around midnight. You climb slowly through the steep scree to Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). After celebrating at the summit you descend via Barafu and continue to Mweka Camp for the final night on the mountain.

Elevation: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m  ·  Distance: 5 km up / 12 km down  ·  Time: 6–8 hrs up / 5–7 hrs down  ·  Habitat: Stone Scree & Summit  ·  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Hotel

After breakfast you descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. You complete park formalities, receive your summit certificate, and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi.
